Seasons for Growth Bereavement Support for Children and Young People

It can be really hard for children and young people to cope with a bereavement and to express their feelings.  They may not want to upset any other members of the family and so don’t acknowledge how they are feeling but their behaviour can tell a different story.

Joining a group and working through the Seasons for Growth programme can help them to talk about what has happened and to become more resilient.

We use the imagery of the four seasons to illustrate that grief is cyclical, not a linear journey with a clear end. Trained “Companions” facilitate small groups of four to seven participants. The children and young people share their experiences, and support and learn from one another. Peer support is a key element of the programme, and confidentiality is strongly emphasised.

The programme runs over eight sessions and the children and young people work with a journal which they can take home at the end of the group.

This programme is available for all bereaved children and young people aged from age 6 to 18 and who live in the local community. It is free of charge and is generally held after school hours in the Church building.
